Black History Month

Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme.  Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history.  The association for the study of African American Life and History also know as ASALH picks a theme every year to focus around.  This year the theme is “African Americans in Times of War.”

“Black History month to me is a celebration of many African American success.” Senior Elice Rhodes said people celebrate Black History Month in al different types of ways. “My family celebrated by site seeing the MLK Center in Atlanta and is home. We also watch a lot of throwback black history movies such as Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and Muhammad Ali ” Rhodes said. “One of my favorite things to learn about people like Rosa Parks, Malcom X, et al. and what they had to go through to reach their success.” Rhodes said
