Ever since COVID, holidays have not been the same. Everyone knows it, and everyone feels the effects. One of those effects of COVID is how Halloween is done now. With lazy parents and school held events. Trunk or treating has been on the rise; it has really made Halloween seem off for the past few years.
Halloween has always been a weird holiday, especially since it is not a holiday that we get school off for. After 7th grade, Halloween becomes irrelevant to most kids, since most kids are going out and going to Halloween parties. I guess those are more entertaining than trick or treating. Which is entirely disappointing.
I always thought that Halloween was a good time to spend time with people, especially when you’re walking around and being able to bond and spend time with your friends and family. Personally, I love spending time with my family and being able to take my little cousins out trick or treating. It’s a good time usually, and only sometimes is it cold.
My feelings about Halloween may also be with my lack of interest in parties, usually filled with bad choices, and never really wanting to participate in stuff like that. You’re not getting candy, what’s the point of that? It’s what Halloween was built on: going out and getting candy from strangers, putting the “treat” in trick or treating.
Trunk or treating has also really put an end to the spirit of Halloween. Borderline removing what made Halloween: Trick or Treating. Granted, it is a lot easier to just go to several trunks or treats events and get as much candy as you would if you were to only go trick or treating. With the same 2-hour time frame, and being able to go to multiple trunks or treats, it makes sense to go to those instead.
Trick or treating was understanding that you had to get a move on, being able to make use of your time. Strategically, hitting certain houses for the right candy, and having a specific route, this was the fun in Halloween, you had one shot, and you couldn’t mess it up. This is what made Halloween fun, but with trunk or treats, these are not factors in play. Ruining everything that Halloween is about.
