I’m not sure how factually accurate this is, so forgive me if I’m spreading misinformation. However, it seems to me at least, LIKE EVERY SINGLE BOOK IS MADE INTO A MOVIE OR TV SHOW. And this just doesn’t need to be the case. Sometimes books are better left alone; they are better as books.
Mind you, there are exceptions to this, there always are. I love a good book-based movie (there has to be a name for that). For example, some of my favorites include Wonderboys, Dead Poets Society, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Not truly original favorites because you’ll find them on every “Top 100 Movies To Watch” list, but it’s for a reason. THEY ARE GOOD. As are many other film adaptations (I found the name for it).
Now here’s the problem: I think that when authors write characters, they write them for each reader to interpret. I know that my version of characters I read looks different then yours. And this is totally okay because they aren’t real; they are our characters to interpret however we want. Until they are adapted into movies and shows, where one person’s views of the characters get to outshine everyone else’s interpretation.
Another reason I’m not always a huge fan of film adaptations is that they can change the storyline. When an author writes a book, they include details and plotlines for a reason. So when film adaptations are made, and the plot is changed, and they cut characters out. Simply put…I feel a bit betrayed. If you’re going to change books into something, at least keep with the original plot.
In conclusion, not every book needs to be adapted for the screen. Some are better enjoyed as just words in my head.
