Clusterduck is possibly the strangest app I have on my phone. It’s a free mobile game in which you are trying to breed mutated ducks in order to win battles against other ducks. While the premise of the game is very simple, the wide variety of duck possibilities keeps the game interesting, especially with seasonal collections and randomly generated two-sentence biographies. Additionally, although it does have ads, they’re not intrusive. They mostly appear as small banners along the bottom of the screen
The way the game works is very simple. You start out with regular, non-mutated ducks. As they lay eggs, they begin to develop strange characteristics, such as oddly-shaped heads or different colors of feathers. As time goes on, the ducks you hatch get stranger and stranger. However, since you can’t have more than 25 ducks at a time, you regularly have to sacrifice your ducks into the mysterious hole in the ground. Once ten ducks have been thrown into the hole, they can face against ten others in a “Duck-Off.”
The format of “Duck-Offs” is very simple. You and your opponent take turns choosing one of three random categories in which each duck is assigned a number. You gain a point if the duck you select has a higher number than the other person’s. The best of seven rounds wins. You also get two randomly selected power-ups. The closer you and your opponent are in your ducks’ level of ability, the more strategic you have to be. There are also multiple opportunities to increase your ducks’ power before they enter the sacrifice hole.
Overall, Clusterduck is a funny little game that, despite its simple design, can be endlessly entertaining.
