Students Speak Up
April 23, 2018
April 20, 10:00 am, 200 students.
On April 20, an estimated 200 students walked out of their third-period class to honor the students and teachers who died in school shootings. The students had a moment of silence honoring each of the 17 individuals who were killed on Feb. 14, at Parkland High school, followed by reading the names of the students and teachers.
Five main speakers lead the walkout. These leaders have been planning, the non-political walkout, for around three weeks. Susanne Ward told the students that,
“the American Dream is about being able to make a difference, being able to stand up for what you believe in, being able to make your voice heard, regardless of political parties.”
“We are all students. We are all dreamers. Dreaming of an education free from fear. Dreaming of a world safe from violence,” Ward said, “Dreaming of solutions.” The objective of the walkout was to encourage students to speak up against gun violence, promote safety in schools, and register to vote.
