Random Acts Of Kindness

Random Acts of Kindness are selfless acts performed by a person wishing to assist or cheer up an individual. Mrs. Arthur teaches Sociology at North, and she has a Random Acts of Kindness program going on in her classes.

“Students in sociology are required to do a service learning project, but when senior projects were introduced, a lot of students taking sociology either their junior or senior year, for the most part were done with their service learning,” Arthur said.

Mrs. Arthur introduced the Random Acts of Kindness idea because she felt there was a need to give her students another opportunity, rather than traditional service learning.

“We do a unit on social inequalities and it runs into holiday time and I think a lot of students start to think about how fortunate they may be, and how they can help others.”

Her students have thrived with the Random Acts of Kindness project and have given overwhelmingly positive feedback.

“They love it. I have them do a reflection and I get reflection after reflection, year in and year out, about how positive and how much fun it was,” Arthur said. “A lot of times, students will say that at first they didn’t really want to do it or they didn’t have time for it, but once they do it they have very positive impressions.”
