As students arrive at school and begin to walk to class on Friday morning, a relatively new sight greets them. A recycling bin from each class has been set outside the door, waiting to be emptied by a member of the new Environmental Club. Junior Vamshi Balanaga, president of the newly sprouted group, started it in an attempt to improve the school’s environmentally-friendly initiatives.

“We understand the harmful effects of global warming and deforestation and want to reduce that impact that humans have on the planet,” Balanaga said. “Our main goal is to curb the harmful effect that humans have on the environment by doing our part at CNHS to reduce our carbon footprint.”

Balanaga not only wants the club to improve the school but also to change the community gradually.

“The Environmental Club just started at the beginning of the year and as of yet, we just recycle the paper at school,” he said. “However, we are looking to start doing other things like plant trees and switch the school to environmentally friendly resources.”

Other members like junior Sam Lamba, the vice president of the club, are also passionate about helping the environmental situation at school.

“Environmental Club gives me an opportunity to make sure that our planet does not go to waste,” Lamba said. “I personally would like to see our school become carbon positive and use renewable resources like solar power. This, I feel, would launch us into the modern era and allow us to be more successful.”
