Formal Stress

In a perfect world, Formal would be a carefree, fun evening where students get to dress up and just have a good time. Unfortunately, that perfect world is a Disney rom com, and we have to face the real trials of what it takes to have a “good” formal.

Last year, I went with only a group of girls, and honestly my biggest concern was how many photos my mom would want to take. This year, I actually have a date, and now I have to worry about flowers, matching color scheme, plans before formal, plans after formal, groups where everyone gets along, and the amount of photos our parents are going to take. Dates have not only been a massive stress for me, but it has affected my friends, as well. Personally, I don’t understand why finding a formal date is this impactful. What I find is that people who go with good friends, or go with good friends/significant others have a better time than people going with someone just to have a date. This also ties into groups. Groups should be comprised ofpeople who know each other. Yes, maybe only one date knows everybody, but at least go with people you will be comfortable with. Comfort with a group is crucial if after formal is on the agenda. I highly recommend doing something after formal but putting it all together might cause more stress.

Dresses. Finding a dress will either the greatest or maybe the stress of all formal season. Going to countless stores, trying on so many dresses that your clothes begin to sparkle, and having a breakdown in the dressing room are just the norms. Last year, it took me a total of four dresses to pick out the one I would wear. This year, I had to try on at least 15 to find the one that was perfect for me. Now, I know that boys have their own struggles when it comes to finding an outfit to wear. My date, however, was able to find his tie in the back of his closet, so I’d say that we could have it worse. Of course, after you but the dress, finish the plans, all  you have to do is relax.

Wrong.

Actual Formal is also a major concern, at least for me. I can not dance. I mean I have some rhythm, but I am constantly reminded by friends that I could always improve. Dancing is another stress, and to those Freshmen that are out of the loop, yes, the circle does exist. Though when it’s 11 o’clock, nobody cares, which is truly the most important takeaway. Formal is stress, but it is also a lot of fun. Just surround yourself with good people, food, and fabulous attire, and the stress of it all will , hopefully, be worth it.
