How the cold affects athletes

How+the+cold+affects+athletes

As the temperature plunges into the mid 20s, many of us are staying inside. However, you will still see athletes running and exercising out in the cold, facing the issue of ice and snow. Cross Country runner Mackenzie Barnett does a few simple things to stay warm and safe .

As the snow began falls and ice begins freeze  Barnett knew she needed to prepare for a long slippery run.

“ In the snow I have to be careful. My ankles will twist really easily in it since it’s not solid. I have to avoid the ice I have slipped a couple of times before.” she said.

Once she has taken the proper precautions Barnett also has to make sure she maintains a safe body temperature. According to runningworld.com the best way to run in the cold and stay warm is to dress in many layers, as you run and your body heats up you can shed layers as you run to help you stay comfortable.

“If I am running by myself I’ll run with a couple layers and I will strip them as I go”, Barnett said. “But if I am running at school with a group I will just wear leggings and a long sleeve shirt.” It’s different for all people running in the cold, according to Barnett, “It’s really not much different it’s not as hard the heat makes everything harder”.
