Dashing into Season


Coach Louis Sipe elaborates on how the athletes have been preparing during winter conditioning for the upcoming track and field season.

  • What are all of the different track and field activities?

“Long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, 100m sprint, 200m sprint, boys 110m hurdles, girls 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 400m dash, 800m, 1 mile, 2 miles, 4×1 relay, 4×4 relay and the 4×8 relay.”

  • When did conditioning begin?

“Conditioning began when we got back from Christmas break. Speed development was throughout the fall which led into our current off-season conditioning.”

  • How does conditioning prepare runners and throwers for the season?

“Speed development drills help them to get a jump-start for the season. We also do strength work so the overall fitness level is better when we get into the season.”

  • What kind of conditioning exercises are specialized for discus, shot put, sprints and long distance events?

 “Throwers are doing a lot of weight lifting and footwork drills right now. Sprinters are working on speed development/running types of drills and long distance runners are working with the Winter Warriors.”

  • Which activities focus more on strength?

“Throwing and sprinting, but strength is a component for all of the events.”

  • Which activities focus more on speed and agility?

“Field events and sprints.”
