The newly established boys’ volleyball team emerged from a sectional win in its first season as an officially sanctioned IHSAA sport. With the second season just around the corner, the players prepare themselves for the full season ahead. As the spring inches closer, senior Ramu Alagappan elaborates on his goals for the regular season and how long he has been participating in the game of volleyball.
“I’d say some personal goals this season, which would be to develop a connection with each one of my teammates, especially my hitters, because that’s my role, and a team goal would be to win sections this year,” said Alagappan. “I’ve played for 2 years, kind of on and off, freshman and sophomore year, and then I played pretty much mostly junior year, and going into the senior year.”
Alagappan also describes his position on the team and where he needs to enhance his game.
“I play setter, and I’m the middle-man between my defense and offense, and I kind of give the offense the ball to hit,” said Alagappan. “Unfortunately, I’m a little short, so I do need to work on my jump probably.”
Senior Anyu Gong also speaks on his personal goals as well as goals he hopes to achieve with the team in mind.
“For the season, I hope that our team can develop our skills as well as win sectionals this year, Gong said. “Some personal goals this season are to improve my jump serve, blocking technique, and shot selection.”
Contributing to the flow of the game as the setter, senior Gian Alvarez defines his position on the team and explains how he might need to improve for the team’s second official season based on the amount of time he has put into the sport.
“Setter, the setter is the team’s control tower; they get to be the king of the court, Alvarez said. “I’ve been playing volleyball since March of 2025, so around 10 months, and when it comes to my skills, now I think I need to work on my serves more.”
Circling back, Gong talks about his role, working on improving the team, and why he enjoys the sport.
“I play both right side and outside. This position requires me to communicate with passers during serve reception, the setter during my approach, and other hitters when coordinating blocks. I need to improve my awareness of the court.” Gong said. “I love the team aspect of the sport since every player plays a key role.”
With practices commencing, Alvarez expresses his most anticipated game of the season.
“I’m excited to play against East because there are going to be lots of people who show up to North vs. East games,” Alvarez said.
