You think that I’m going to rave about how much I love Man’s Best Friend? Well, you’re absolutely right. Sabrina Carpenter absolutely nailed this album, dare I say her best yet.
Track 1 is Manchild, and it is a good thing it was a single that came out a while before the rest of the album because it took the longest to grow on me. I had been really excited to hear it, and honestly it just wasn’t what I was expecting. I hated the chorus, and the part with “stupid, or is it slow, maybe it’s useless.” It just scratched my brain wrong. However, I loved the second chorus, I quote “how survive the earth so long” daily. The song as a whole has really grown on me, but I would say it’s still one of the worst on the album.
Nobody’s son is a full 180. One of my absolute favorites, it is nothing but bar after bar. I’m sorry, “all my friends in love and I’m the one they call for a third wheeling?” Sabrina, you really did not need to clip me like that. “He discovered it this week!” made me cackle the first time I heard it. It’s such a fun song and the lyrics are amazing.
We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night gave me its whole heart. Every time I listen to it I suddenly find myself in a toxic relationship I refuse to get out of. Sabrina is also such a second verse queen, I feel like that’s always my favorite part of the song. However, her bridge cooked on this one, “We were here last night and we’ll be here tomorrow” is so perfect. The backing vocals near the end feels so incredibly cinematic, I love it.
Maybe it’s just because the singles get overplayed the most, but I didn’t love Tears either. It feels too commercially for me personally. At certain times it also feels a little like someone sat on a soundboard because there’s just a lot of noise. It’s not a bad song, like I wouldn’t switch the station if it came on the radio, but it just pales in comparison to the rest of the album.
Sugar Talking is criminally underrated. It is one of my favorites on the album, not because of lyricism, but her vocals purely carry the song. It’s very unlike the rest of the album sound wise, but I’m obsessed with it, her voice is so low and sultry.
Tiktok has ruined When Did You Get Hot? for me. I loved it my first listen, but I have heard it so many times it’s not good anymore. I’m sorry, I just can’t watch another edit of a mid white actor to this song where the first part is some genuine child who played their younger self.
Never Getting Laid is one of the funniest songs to me. The juxtaposition is laid on so thick it’s hilarious. The chorus sounds really fun and cute, it’s my favorite part of the song by far. However, I always skip the part at the end when it slows down. The lyrics add to the song, but the sound is just too slow and off from the rest of the song.
Go Go Juice is not my favorite by any means, but it’s so fun I feel like I smile every time I hear the chorus. My favorite part is the part near the end with the “ba-da-da-da-da.” I love it so much, it sounds like slap happy girlhood to me. I feel like I’m at a sleepover with my friend reading out the “do you me still love?” text before sending it.
Don’t Worry I’ll Make You Worry is probably my favorite on the album. It is the perfect palate cleanser between two much faster paced songs. Everything about the lyricism is perfection, no notes, especially the first two lines. Nothing could encapsulate the song better, and the end of the first verse is so fitting. “And I’ll never call you right back, but when I do, I’m making you laugh.” I could rave about this song all day. The sound, the lyrics, everything, perfect.
Unpopular opinion, I don’t love House Tour either. I think the extended metaphor is clever and I see the vision, I just feel like it’s too much. However, I absolutely love how she says “My house is on pretty girl avenue.”
Goodbye is such a good album closer, it has the message behind it, but it’s still so fun. This song is so chronically Sabrina, it’s so fitting to end the album with.
Overall, I feel like this album is the best Carpenter has released. She really found her sound with Emails I Can’t Send and Short n’ Sweet, but Man’s Best Friend encapsulated who she has grown to become. I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next, but for now, arrivederci, and au revoir.
