North V Southport

Matthew Hager (9), Jaxson Scruggs (3) and Bryant Trinkle (24) during the Southport v. Columbus North game Friday September 3.

This past Friday Sept. 3, the North Bull Dogs fought the Southport Cardinals and won with a score of 54-13. Senior Matthew Hager expected a rough fight but was pleasantly surprised with the result.
“The way the coaches were talking prior to the game, I expected it to be a dog fight with all of their players.” Hager said.
But because of the team’s hard work and dedication, the fight ended up being an easy win.
“After the first drive, I was kind of surprised because they came out and scored a touchdown early.” Hager said. “But after that, we just kept hammering the ball in and I thought ‘this is a no- brainer.”
Hager, as well as the rest of the team, is very excited about the win, considering this was the first conference game this season.
“I felt my performance was really good. After Friday it really showed the type of player that I can be and the type of effort I can put in week- in and week- out.” Hager said. “I plan to sustain that performance.”
But, there is always room for improvement on the team, especially with their conference games coming up.
“One thing we need to do is not let our heads get down and look to the next play because the most important play is the next one.” Hager said.
As for the rest of the season, Hager hopes to bring home a championship win, as well as conference.
“The rest of our season is going to play out really well. I have very strong feelings that we’re going to win the conference again this year.” Hager said. “Another goal is to end on a high note. We have a tough opponent coming up and we want to end their winning streak.”
The Bull Dogs’ next game will be Friday September 10, at Roncalli high school.
