Members of the CNHS Track Team Prepare for Postseason Meets

3, 2, 1, the starter shouts, and members of the CNHS track team take off. The postseason meets are officially underway, and the racers are fighting for their spots on the roster.

Multiple members, such as Sophomore Collin Pruitt, have already placed in sectionals and are now preparing for their race at regionals.

“This year in the 4×8 relay, my team qualified for regionals as the #1 seed, and we are looking to move on to state after the meet,” Pruitt said.

While Pruitt has his eye on state, others, such as Sophomore Helena Ho, are simply excited to qualify for the second round.

“I am really excited about qualifying for regionals and I’m also happy to see quite a few other track teammates qualify as well,” Ho said.

To prepare for the next race on the road to state, members of the CNHS track team must increase their practice time, and team members that qualify for the final round will even have to carry their dedication over to a few days in the summer.

“During regular season we practice 5 days a week, from 3:30-5:30,” Ho said. “But during sectionals, we also come in on Saturday morning.”

The majority of the aforementioned practices overlap with study-time during finals week, which can be a difficult aspect for student athletes, such as Sophomore Ella Meek, to juggle.

“It’s definitely stressful to balance it all,” Meek said. “But, I use my down time such as bus rides to and from meets to study and get my homework done. Some of the other girls are in similar classes so it actually helps to have them to work with.”

Despite the struggles of participating in post regular season meets, Meek does not regret her decision to join the team in the journey.

“I don’t regret joining track,” Meek said. “Even though it’s time consuming and I’m often sore from it, I have made so many new friends, and I enjoy competing.”
