Lena and Aaron Oberholtzer have recently bought some property from Rhetta Glick and is now requesting to build a puppy kennel. Many animal advocates have strong opinions about the possibility this being built in our community. Junior Vamshi Balanaja tells us his opinions on whether he agrees or disagrees with the idea of a puppy mill in Columbus.
“Additionally, puppy mills are unsanitary since the dog kennels are regularly cleaned. As such, pathogens from dog feces spread and virii flourish. This not only bad for the dogs and the puppies that are being bred, it is bad for the neighboring community.” said junior Vamshi Balanaga.
Since the people that run the puppy mill do not clean the dogs are not healthy.
“These disease inflicted puppies are then sold to unsuspecting customers who are left to take care of a dying puppy,” Balanaga said.
The people that buy puppies from a puppy mill are not fully aware of the conditions the puppies are bred in. There are opinions and arguments for why there should not have a puppy mill but we are not sure of those opinions are being heard by the town of Columbus.
“The combination of all these effects is, in my opinion, a sound argument for not having a puppy mill,” Balanaga said.
The city of Columbus was not entirely responsible for the construction of a new puppy mill.
“A private entity wants to. This same private entity (run by Lena Oberholtzer) has been notified by the USDA for not keeping dogs satisfactory clean.” Balanaga said.
On January 22, 2018, there was a protest held at the Columbus Municipal Airport for the anticipation of a large turnout. The applicants would like to build a puppy kennel, they plan to breed small dogs and it will not be open to the public. There would be about 80 cages and there would also be several outdoors dog runs and exercise areas. The planning department recommended that the board pass the application from Aaron and Lena Oberholtzer to allow the construction of the family-owned kennel. The area that they wanted to build the kennel on is in use for agricultural land under the county zoning codes, a kennel is a conditional use. It requires the approval by the board of zoning appeals. The propose for the dog kennel has been denied. The board voted 4 to 1 turndown request, citing the concerns about the use of prime farmland and was suggesting that the operation was more appropriate in a more commercial area. The crowd that had filled the downstairs meeting room at the Airport was overjoyed with excitement.
