Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over France during the French and Mexican War. Cinco de Mayo is very similar to our fourth of July. A lot of Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, festivals, music and parties. Senior Rocky Shafer shared what he and his family do every year for the special holiday.

“My family and I really enjoy celebrating Cinco de Mayo because we all get together and have a big party. Last year we went to Indianapolis and celebrated there,” Shafer said.

Some foods that are popular include tacos, guacamole and nachos.

“My mom always likes to prepare the food and she usually makes arroz con pollo for all of us,” Shafer said.

Different cultures celebrate Cinco de Mayo too. For example sophomore Arig Tong and her family celebrate Cinco de Mayo for fun.

“We don’t have a huge get together, but we do like to cook a lot of Mexican foods to celebrate,” Tong said.
